Along with Malbec, Torrontes is the other great Argentine wine export. It has a remarkably aromatic, fragrant character not too dissimilar to Viognier, but crucially, and unlike the latter, it has a lovely fresh acidity on the palate. The Alta Vista 2013 recently scooped the top score (17.5/20) in an extensive Decanter magazine tasting of the grape, beating many other examples at much higher prices. It is delicious, very well made and a great buy at under £10 a bottle.

Our remarkable Spanish discovery—fully mature and delicious red wine from the relatively unknown Terra Alta (The Highlands) of Catalonia, just South of Priorat. This Gran Reserva is made from very old vines (up to 100 years old), and has been awarded a gold medal in Brussels. Really exceptional value and a very exciting wine—highly recommended, especially at this price.

Ambriel Classic Cuvée from West Sussex is the best English sparkling wine under £30 a bottle we have ever tasted and outshines just about all Champagne in the same price bracket. The wine critics undoubtedly agree with us as this wine has had incredible press and accolades in it’s short life span. We have been toying with the idea of stocking an English fizz for a very long time, after trying plenty of them, this was hands-down the best quality and most exceptional wine we tried. Made from 70% Chardonnay, 27% Pinot Noir, 3% Pinot Meunier, the wine has beautiful biscuit-y, yeasty flavours and full of the complexity one would expect from Champagne.

The Esterhazy’s have been making some of Austria’s most iconic wines since the 18th Century. Their ‘flagship’ wine is a glorious Grüner Veltliner coupled with their new Sauvignon Blanc which gives the better wines from the Loire & New Zealand a run for their money – and its only £9.95. Their reds are unique to Austria – their Estoras Blaufrankisch – Merlot – Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt – both are rich full-bodied wines. All of these wines are the most remarkable value for money and heavily subsidised by the modern day Esterhazy Foundation. We have put together a mixed case of 3 bottles of each at the discounted price of £120 so you can try them all…

A terrific red from the Bordeaux/Bergerac border. Both the vineyard and Château de Fayolle date from the 15th C, just after 300 years of English Plantagnet rule came to an end in Aquitaine. Ch. Fayolle’s limestone and chalk terroir overlooks the Dordogne River to the north and the Marmant River to the south. A lack of herbicide use and low yields maintain the quality of consummate winemaking by Jean Gazaniol in oak barrels. We believe this is, one of the finest in the Bergerac appellation. A delicious and cost effective alternative to red Bordeaux.

A terrific white from the Bordeaux/Bergerac border. Both the vineyard and Château de Fayolle date from the 15th C, just after 300 years of English Plantagnet rule came to an end in Aquitaine. Ch. Fayolle’s limestone and chalk terroir on a tributuary of the Dordogne, the Marmant, with its deliberately low yield, no herbicides and consummate winemaking by Jean Gazaniol in oak barrels, is, we believe, one of the finest in the Bergerac appellation. The white wine that changed Bergerac, won every award and became the benchmark that other growers aspire to. A blend of Sauvignon, Semillion & a touch of Muscadelle—carefully crafted by master wine-maker Hugh Ryman to make a rich, dry, totally organic white of an exceptionally high caliber. If Jaubertie was in Bordeaux rather than Bergerac….the wine would be at least £5.00 a bottle more.
