If true Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc is your thing, though, then the 2015 Domaine de l’Ermitage Menetou-Salon (2) will be right up your cup of tea. Again, it’s 100 per cent Sauvignon Blanc and very well priced compared to Sancerre or Pouilly Fumé of similar quality. Indeed, I’ve never understood why Menetou-Salon doesn’t get the same acclaim as those two. This example is a peach and where the Sauvignon Saint Bris is perhaps a little restrained and reserved, this is more expressive and expansive, with enticing hints of tropical fruit and a deeply satisfying underlying freshness. They’ve been making wine on this estate for almost 500 years and I think it’s fair to say that they’ve pretty much cracked it by now. They must have, for this very wine won gold at the recent Decanter World Wine Awards. £13.45 down from £13.95

This award winning Rosé from the foothills of Cézanne Mont Sainte Victoire can be found in some of the very best Michelin starred restaurants throughout France, and with good reason. It is exactly what you would expect of a very serious Provencal Rosé: dry, wonderfully delicate, with a lovely salmon colour and a complex fruit and floral bouquet. Stunning value for a wine of this calibre. This wonderful Provencal Rosé also comes in some of the most spectacular Magnum bottles we’ve seen—ideal for parties and barbecues.

The 2012 St. Émilion (3), from a stellar estate, is comprised almost entirely of Merlot and is velvety soft and supple. But there’s character and weight to the wine, too, and buckets of ripe, juicy fruit. It’s a wine with both grace and power. I would liken it to a beautiful, galloping white horse. £19.45 down from £19.95.

We’ve offered the 2011 St. Estèphe (4) from a fine 3rd Growth estate before and although it was forward and approachable it still had something to give. It’s still robust, but its ripe damson, cherry and plum fruit has come to the fore and it’s heading to its prime. A veritable love heart of a wine. £19.45 down from £19.95.

The 2015 vintage began its growing season with an abundance of water reserves in the soil. Mild weather starting in April led to fast-growth on the vine followed by good weather throughout the spring. Rainfall of 60 mm in June was widely beneficial allowing the vines to never suffer from water stress leading to quick ripening. July and August were hot and dry.

These ideal conditions led to an early Harvest starting on August 25, seven days earlier than the previous, 2014 Harvest. As September arrived, temperatures became more temperate slowing grape maturation and giving rise to an ideal climate in which to select and pick grapes.

The convergence of optimal conditions makes the 2015 vintage to be one of the best and most balanced at Château d’Esclans. The wines are both aromatic and fine with dominant citrus notes. Acid balance is perfect bringing both freshness and the necessary tension to the wines, but without providing aggressive notes.

We are awaiting a further shipment of Whispering Angel magnums from France. Delivery is due to take place in Mid-July
