The elegance and charm of this great wine reflect the spirit of the Chanfreau family who explained the other day to us that the wine, which we thought is drinking beautifully now still has another 5-7 years drinking ahead of it. For a wine from this wonderful vintage and from such a quality driven producer, the price tag is unbelievable.

    £12.95

Known as ‘the bad boy of Bordeaux,’ Jean-Luc Thunevin was the pioneer of the garagiste movement: very high end wines produced from extremely low yields on small parcels of vines in St Emilion. The most famous and expensive example is Jean-Luc’s Château Valandraud (the 2006 fetches over £1,700 a case). Domaine Virginie belongs to Thunevin’s daughter but he is the winemaker. It’s therefore no surprise then that this claret is rich, concentrated and absolutely delicious. Unlike many of the garagiste wines it is also fantastic value.

Sociando-Mallet has cult status in France. It is easy to see why, this Haut-Médoc has operated at the level of the classed growths for many years and is renowned for its purity, concentration and longevity. In many ways the wines behaves more like those of St Estèphe, such as Château Calon Ségur or even Château Montrose, not surprising when you realise that Sociando-Mallet neighbours the St Estèphe commune and has vineyards overlooking the Gironde. Jean Gautreau is the estate’s uncompromising owner. L’Autre de Sociando Mallet is the second wine of Sociando Mallet and normally reserved in France for the restaurant trade. Undeniably a wine from a great pedigree with fabulous structure. This is a mature claret and for drinking over the next couple of years and value for money-wise – this is as good as it gets.
