Often known as Muscat of Alexandria or Muscat Gordo Blanco, Lexia is part of the hardy, spicy and versatile Muscat family. The Brown family has had a long association with the variety. There were Muscat of Alexandria cuttings in the first ten-acre vineyard planted by John Francis Brown at Milawa in 1885 and of the different varietal wines produced by the Brown family today, Lexia is one of the best known and most popular. Produced from fruit allowed to ripen on the vine well into autumn, it is a delicious late harvest wine, exuding the variety’s natural fruity characters and the mouth-filling lusciousness that comes from fully ripened fruit. Food Pairing: Laksa and other spicy dishes or a platter of washed rind cheese served with slices of fresh pear. Also with desserts such as orange poppy-seed cake or lemon delicious.

Muscat of Alexandria is part of the exotic Muscat family. The Romans are believed to have given the grape its name as they found its distinctive aroma akin to that of musk, and hence called it Moscato – smelling of musk. Viticultural experts have identified at least 200 different members of the Muscat family and several of these different clones have been cultivated in Australia for as long as grapes have been grown here. Australian winemakers have a fondness for the variety. It produces delicious, plump, juicy grapes and, depending on which clone is cultivated, when it is harvested and how it is handled, it can produce a wide range of wine styles. If harvested early, it produces delicate, perfumed, crisp, dry white table wines but if left to hang on the vines several weeks longer it produces rich flavoursome dessert wines. Food Pairing: Serve with or without food, or as an aperitif or table wine. Try it with baked Stanley apple filled with quince and hazelnuts and mascarpone cheese or a platter of fresh tropical fruits.

Orange Muscat and Flora are two white grape varieties that are little known or planted in Australia. As the name suggests, Orange Muscat is part of the Muscat family and hails from the south-east of France. The variety is said to have derived its name from the golden hues the grapes develop when fully ripe and the strong aroma of orange blossom given off at vintage when the grapes are freshly crushed. Flora was developed at the Californian Agricultural Department Station in 1958 from a cross between the white grapes Semillon and Gewürztraminer. It produces a wine of fragrance and body with a fresh acid backbone.

In the 1960’s Jose, Nicolas, Jesus and Angel, all member of the medina family who were working at different Jerez wineries, decided to create their own winery. The firm decided to focused their energies on the international market and gradually expand the business through various acquisitions of other companies. This continued to be the case as they introduced an aggressive business strategy and started to acquire different brands that strengthened and diversified their product range. Their latest acquisition was the international group William & Humbert and their famous sherry came with the acquisition. The production process for the Williams & Humbert Walnut Brown is controlled fermentation and fortifired at 19.5°. They then blend, Palomino, Pedro Ximenez and Muscatel and then rack them into clean casks before entering the Crisderas y soleras system. This is for the physical chemical ageing through oxidation in oak casks. In these oak casks they will be aged for at least 4 years.
