Alta Vista Classic Torrontés, Cafayate, Salta, 2013

    £9.95

Along with Malbec, Torrontes is the other great Argentine wine export. It has a remarkably aromatic, fragrant character not too dissimilar to Viognier, but crucially, and unlike the latter, it has a lovely fresh acidity on the palate. The Alta Vista 2013 recently scooped the top score (17.5/20) in an extensive Decanter magazine tasting of the grape, beating many other examples at much higher prices. It is delicious, very well made and a great buy at under £10 a bottle.

The majority of fruit for this wine (Cabernet Sauvignon 46%, Malbec 25%) was sourced from the Justin Vineyard in the Frankland River area of the Great Southern growing region.Southern Australia in spring 2006 meant the vines were in excellent health in the lead up to harvest. The warm and dry weather of summer extended throughout the ripening and harvest period, resulting in fruit of excellent condition and flavour.Winemaking: Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec from Frankland River, were harvested at optimum flavour ripeness. The separate parcels were fermented in static fermenters, with careful management to attain excellent colour and tannin extraction. The wines were pressed and transferred to Bordeaux-coopered French oak for maturation over eighteen months. Following maturation, the wine was blended and fined with a small amount of egg white. Tasting Notes:Bright and luminous, inky red with a scarlet hue. The intense and brooding aromas display characters of mulberry, black cherry and cassis combined with tobacco leaf, cigar box and cinnamon oak notes. The concentrated palate shows vibrant red berry and raspberry fruits with flavours of dark chocolate and coffee. Fine tannins lend a rich velvety structure and provide the wine with great length and density.

This bottle contains our best efforts from the cultivation of the vine, the wine and its ageing. The Malbec train comes from our own vineyards located 1476 feet above sea level with an average age of 30 years. The carefully controlled alcoholic fermentation process gives rise to a balanced wine. Twenty four months in barrels of American and French oak with a medium roasted beginning, finishing eight months bottled to a temperature and with adequate moisture. Service: We recommend between 65°F and 68°F temperature. Pairing: Red meat, hard cheeses, pastas, intermediate and soft flavour dishes.

In the hunt for our first Argentinian Malbec, we eventually found this very fine specimen from the Correas family. Produced on their vineyard in Mendoza, which undoubtedly produces the World’s best Malbec. Robert Parker, awarded the 2007 with 91 points making it a ‘Best Buy’; an extraordinarily high rating for a wine at this price. This is a serious Malbec and a great entry point to the wines of Argentina, packed full of intense dark fruit notes. As you’d expect, this goes brilliantly with steak!
